When I’m sick, there’s nothing better than laying on the couch and watching episode after episode of your favorite show. Well, I haven’t been sick recently (knock on wood!) but unemployed, sort of similar. The only show I have on DVD besides Fawlty Towers is JEM and the Hologram. So, I entertained myself the other day by watching a few episodes.
And my adult mind started to analyze the show. First, a plot description for those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about.

The plot revolves around the secret that Jem (of Jem and the Holograms) is actually the alter ego of owner/manager of Starlight Music and the Starlight Orphanage. Jerrica adopts this persona with the help of Synergy, a holographic computer built by Jerrica’s deceased father. The only people who know her secret are the 3 Holograms – Kimber, Aja, and Shana.

The Holograms’ rival band is the Misfits – Pizzazz, Roxy and Stormer. Most episodes involve an evil plot by the Misfits to upstage Jem and the Holograms.
The only people who know about Jerrcia/Jem are the other Holograms, not even Jerrica’s boyriend Rio. The thing is that Rio also has a thing for Jem. In episodes, the two are even seen kissing! Now, wouldn’t Jerrica be pissed?!?! Here is her boyfriend snuggling up to some super star and making out with her when he’s supposed to be with her!

Of course they are the same person but Rio doesn’t know that and lets his morals slip away. Jem struggles with her identiy and wants to tell Rio several times, but doesn’t. Not telling him doesn’t make sense either. If she tells him, he will be less conflicted between the two and realize that he can really have both.
Just saying, the morals of this show are a bit warped. But they make up for it with a truely outragous PSA at the end of every episode. “Wearing a helmet makes you a superstar!”
